Gold rose on speculation that the dollar will ease, boosting demand for the precious metal as an alternative investment. Platinum rose, capping the longest rally in two months.

The dollar fluctuated against a basket of six major currencies. The euro has climbed 3.3 percent from a four-year low on June 7 as European-debt concerns abated. Yesterday, gold futures reached a record $1,266.50 an ounce. The metal has gained 13 percent this year.

"You're seeing the flight-to-quality fears out of Europe subsiding and gold returning to its classic relationship to the dollar," said Adam Klopfenstein, a senior market strategist at Lind-Waldock in Chicago.

29/9/09    LARGEST DIAMOND DISCOVERD IN RECENT YEARS .

A 507 carat stone, which may be worth $20m  was found with three other large diamonds.

They were discovered at the famous Cullinan mine, where the largest diamond in history was found more than 100 years ago.

A 480 carat diamond found at the end of last year fetched $18m.

"The Cullinan mine has again given the world a spectacularly beautiful and important diamond," said Petra's chief executive Johan Dippenaar.

"Initial indications are that it is of exceptional colour and clarity, which suggest extraordinary potential for its polished yield."

It is one of the 20 biggest, high quality diamonds to have been found.

The largest diamond ever to be  discovered, named the Cullinan, was 3,106 carats. It was cut into nine separate stones, many of which are in the British Crown Jewels.

DIAMOND NEWS 25/3/09         DIAMOND METEORITE FOUND

In 1981,  Smithsonian researchers tried to cut through a large iron meteorite that had crash-landed in the Allen Hills of Antarctica, the sawteeth on their blade got  chewed up. Subsequent x-rays showed that the stone was riddled with microscopic diamonds, the hardest substance known. The scientists theorized that the meteorite's diamonds were born during a cataclysmic collision out in the asteroid belt.

NEWS 9/3/09    WHERE ARE DIAMONDS MINED ?

Diamonds are mined in about 25 countries, on every continent but Europe and Antarctica.  Only a few diamond deposits were known until the 20th century, when scientific understanding and technology extended diamond exploration and mining around the globe. For 1,000 years, starting in roughly the 4th century BCE, India was the only source of diamonds. In 1725, important sources were discovered in Brazil, and in the 1870s major finds in South Africa marked a dramatic increase in the diamond supply. Additional major producers now include several African countries, Siberian Russia, and Australia.

It is a  misconception that the world's diamonds come primarily from South Africa: diamonds are a world-wide resource. The common characteristic of primary diamond deposits is the ancient terrain that hosts the kimberlite pipes that bring diamonds to Earth's surface.
